Project description
We are looking for an experienced fiber-optic planner (freelance) for a regional fiber-optic provider who can combine technical planning of fiber-optic networks with in-depth civil engineering expertise.
Responsibilities
- Detailed fiber planning for connecting cell towers (cell sites)—including fiber attribution, splice planning, splice closure and distribution frame design, and documentation at the fiber level
- Creation of detailed wiring diagrams and fiber assignment plans, taking into account the mobile network operator’s redundancy requirements and latency targets
- Preliminary planning of route corridors and transition to detailed planning with precise calculations of route lengths and attenuation
- Sizing of cable types, fiber counts, and conduit systems based on network expansion phases and future-proofing
- Evaluation of route alignments, taking into account civil engineering costs and constructability (soil conditions, intersection structures, permitting status)
- Preparation of quantity takeoffs and cost estimates for civil engineering and installation work based on detailed planning
- Coordination with civil engineering contractors, network operators, and mobile network providers to ensure technically and economically optimal planning results
- Quality assurance of planning documents based on defined handover standards (e.g., as-built documentation, GIS data maintenance)
Requirements
Must-have
These criteria are required for the project.
- Must-have: Several years of experience in detailed fiber-optic planning—particularly fiber attribution, splice planning, joint and distribution frame design, and fiber assignment plans
- Must-have: Proficiency with GIS and planning tools (e.g., QGIS, ArcGIS, FibreMap, Smallworld GIS, or comparable NMS/GIS systems)
- Must-have: In-depth civil engineering expertise—cost estimation, route planning, and construction methods (trenching, HDD, plowing)
- Experience in connecting cellular sites (cell site backhaul) as well as knowledge of technical requirements regarding latency, redundancy, and SLAs
- Knowledge of optical transmission parameters (attenuation budget, OTDR measurements, fiber classes according to ITU-T G.652/G.657)
- Knowledge of relevant standards and regulations (VDE, DIN 18300 et seq., ETSI)
- Desirable: Experience with permitting procedures, right-of-way issues, and coordination with government agencies
- A structured, independent work style and strong communication skills in managing the interface between planning, construction, and network operations
