What this model does not do: it does not replace leadership. If you need someone with authority to instruct because a position is vacant, you need an interim manager. Nor is it an answer to an open strategic question — that is what a freelance management consultant is for. And it is not a permanent solution for a standing duty: work performed on an ongoing, integrated basis belongs in employment, not in a service contract — more on that below.

Good freelancer placement starts with a brief, not with a profile. Anyone who wants to find an IT freelancer and names only a technology receives twenty CVs; anyone who names scope, interface and acceptance receives two that fit. The same applies when you want to find IT experts whose field only becomes clear in conversation. From a network of some 23,000 consultants, experts and interim managers we present quality-assured profiles within 24 to 36 hours.

Step 1 — Sharpen the brief. What should exist at the end, who accepts it, which systems and interfaces are affected, how many days per week, from when? The requirement profile comes out of those answers — and so does the basis for the contract structure described further down.

Step 2 — Pre-selection. We approach suitable experts personally and verify professional fit, comparable projects and genuine availability from the requested start date. You receive profiles with a day rate and a start date.

Step 3 — Engagement and start. You run the interviews and decide. Statement of work, acceptance criteria, duration and day rate are then put in writing — and the assignment constellation is reviewed before the first day begins.

What an IT Freelancer Costs: Day Rates by Field

IT freelancers and subject-matter experts are billed by day of assignment. Across the 193 roles in our network with a documented range, day rates run from €400 to €1,650; the middle corridor sits between €800 and €1,150. An hourly rate can be derived from that, but in German project business it is the exception — the unit billed is the day.

What Drives the Rate

Four variables explain almost the entire range. Depth of specialisation: an SAP architect or LLM specialist sits above a developer with a broad profile. Scarcity: roles with few available people cost more regardless of the task. Urgency: a start within days costs more than a start in six weeks. Workload and duration: five days a week over six months leaves room, two days a week does not.

Budget in days of assignment rather than in months: four days a week at €1,000 comes to roughly €17,000 per month. Travel and incidental costs are added as incurred and agreed before the start.

Contract Form, False Self-Employment and the AÜG: What Is Settled Before Every Assignment

The most common reason a freelancer assignment does not go ahead is not the day rate but the question from procurement or compliance: are we taking on a risk here? In Germany the answer depends on the actual constellation, not on the title of the contract — which is exactly why we review it before anything is commissioned.

Our Service Commitment

• Constellation review before every assignment. Before the contract is signed we review the assignment constellation — freedom from instruction, no integration into your organisation, a bounded brief rather than a standing duty — and we document the result.
• Contract form with a statement of work. Every assignment runs on a service or works contract with a concrete statement of work, acceptance criteria and a defined duration — deliberately not as disguised temporary agency work.
• Evidence on file before the start. Business registration or tax number, several clients and, where relevant, professional liability insurance.
• AÜG licence in place. Where a task carries the characteristics of temporary agency work, we can structure the assignment under German temporary employment law on request instead of forcing it into a works contract.

What we expressly do not promise is an assessment that is not ours to make. Whether self-employment exists is decided in a dispute by the German pension insurance authority and the courts, on the basis of how the work is actually performed. What we promise is the process — review, contract structure and documentation before every assignment — and a straight answer when a task is not suitable for a works contract.

How to Spot a Critical Constellation Yourself

Four patterns are the most common warning signs in practice: the expert works permanently inside a team instead of on a bounded brief; they are tied into duty, holiday or shift rosters; they use only your resources and appear externally like an employee; or the contract describes an activity rather than a result. Where these patterns appear, the issue is not the contract form but the brief — and that is what we sharpen together in step 1.
