What an Expert Team Is — and Why It Is Not a Fourth Category of People

consultingheads places three groups of people: freelance management consultants, IT and subject-matter experts, and interim managers. An expert team is not a fourth group but a delivery format: a cut from those three profiles, with distributed roles, defined handover points and one point of control.

That is why you will not find ready-made team profiles in our network. You see the individual people the team is assembled from, you know every day rate, and you keep the selection. A team is a decision about composition, not a product.

What this format does not do: it does not take control off your desk. There is exactly one role in the team that sets the pace and reports to you — the rest is delivery. If that steering role is also to carry authority to instruct and responsibility for an organizational unit, that is an interim mandate, and we fill it accordingly. And if one person is enough, a single appointment is the cheaper and faster route: a freelance management consultant for an open question, an IT or subject-matter expert for a bounded task.

A Team Carries When Three Things Coincide

Leadership, analysis and delivery are needed in parallel; the interfaces between them are the actual risk; and nobody in house has the time to hold them together. A carve-out, an ERP program and a restructuring are the classic cases.

A Single Appointment Is Enough When the Question Is Single

An open decision goes to a freelance management consultant. A bounded task with describable acceptance goes to an IT or subject-matter expert. A vacant leadership position goes to an interim manager. Buying a team for any of these is paying for coordination you do not need.

And the Case That Is Often Mistaken for a Team

Several people from the same discipline are not a team but capacity. A team has different roles; capacity has the same role several times over. Both are available — but they are priced and steered differently.

How a Team Is Cut: Roles, Handover Points, One Point of Control

A team is described by three things, and all three are settled before the start.

Roles

Who decides, who analyses, who delivers. In practice a cut usually runs one steering role plus two to four delivery profiles — for example a program lead from Project Management, an analytical profile from Finance & Controlling and delivery profiles from SAP & Enterprise Systems or Cloud, Infrastructure & DevOps.

Handover Points

Where one role’s work becomes another’s input — and what has to exist at that point for the next step to begin. Most team programs fail at these seams, not inside the roles.

One Point of Control

Exactly one role sets the pace and reports to you. That keeps one interface instead of four and is the reason a team of externals can be steered at all. A program management office is the common name for that role when the program is large enough to need one full-time.

Assembling a team starts with the cut, not with the people. From a network of some 23,000 consultants, experts and interim managers we present quality-assured profiles within 24 to 36 hours — for a team, that means all roles at once rather than one after another.

Step 1 — Cut the team. Which roles does the program need, where are the handover points, who steers, and how many days per week per role? This is the step that decides the budget, because a team has no price of its own — it has the sum of its roles.

Step 2 — Pre-selection per role. We approach suitable people for every role personally and verify professional fit, comparable programs and genuine availability from the requested start date. You receive profiles with a day rate and a start date, per role.

Step 3 — Start as one unit. You run the interviews and decide on every person. Roles, workload, duration and day rates are then put in writing, and the team starts together rather than in sequence.

What an Expert Team Costs: Day Rates per Role and What Determines the Sum

An expert team has no price of its own but the sum of the day rates of the roles involved — which is why the composition is the real budget decision. For orientation, from our network: interim roles run from €700 to €2,500 per day of assignment, IT and subject-matter roles from €400 to €1,650, and consulting-side profiles from €600 to €2,200.

Billing is per person and per day of assignment, not as a team fee. Scope and workload per role are agreed before the start and can be adjusted as the program progresses — a role can be added, reduced or ended without renegotiating the whole team.

What Determines the Sum

Three variables, in this order. The number of roles: every additional role adds a rate and an interface. The seniority of the steering role: it is usually the most expensive line and the one that pays for itself. The workload per role: a delivery profile at five days a week and an analytical profile at two are a normal cut — staffing everyone full time is the most common way to overpay.

You decide on every single person, you know every day rate, and you have one interface. Control stays in your house; the steering role in the team reports to you.

A Consulting Mandate

A firm sells the commitment and the control together. That is the right choice when you deliberately want to hand over responsibility for the method — and it costs the transparency over who delivers how many days.

An Agency Contract

You buy a result and do not determine the staffing. Efficient for standardized work, and the wrong instrument when the interfaces to your organization are the actual risk.
