What IT and Subject-Matter Experts Take On — and What They Do Not
An IT freelancer or subject-matter expert takes on a bounded task: a migration, an interface, a security concept, a data model, a test strategy. What matters is not in the CV but in the brief — scope, interface to your team and acceptance criteria are describable before the first day begins. Whether the assignment works hangs on exactly that.
Three features define this model. The expert delivers a result, not attendance. They work free of instruction on their own brief and are not integrated into your organisation. And responsibility for the whole stays in house — your project management decides, the expert delivers.
What this model does not do: it does not replace leadership. If you need someone with authority to instruct because a position is vacant, you need an interim manager. Nor is it an answer to an open strategic question — that is what a freelance management consultant is for. And it is not a permanent solution for a standing duty: work performed on an ongoing, integrated basis belongs in employment, not in a service contract — more on that below.

Bounded Task or Full Mandate: When an Expert Is Enough and When Not
consultingheads fills assignments in four models of collaboration. Three describe people, the fourth a delivery format. One question decides: who carries responsibility for the result?
IT and Subject-Matter Experts — Responsibility Stays With You
The brief is describable, the result can be accepted, and control sits in your house. Typical for system migrations, development work, data models, security and data protection concepts. The standard case when capacity and specialist knowledge are missing — not leadership.
Interim Managers — Responsibility Transfers
A position is vacant or a crisis needs a hand on the wheel: the interim manager leads people and budgets with authority to instruct and responsibility for results. To the interim managers
Freelance Management Consultants — the Question Is Open
What is missing is not capacity but a basis for a decision: which option holds, which target picture is defensible, what the route costs. To the freelance management consultants
Expert Teams — Several Profiles, One Point of Control
An expert team is not a fourth category of people but a delivery format: a cut from the three profiles above with distributed roles. The right choice when architecture, delivery and control are needed at the same time. To the expert teams
And the distinction most often overlooked in practice: an agency sells you a team together with its own methodology and its own margin. With an IT freelancer you engage one person directly, at that person’s day rate, using your methodology.
IT and Subject-Matter Experts by Field: From SAP to Cybersecurity
An expert assignment is filled by field of expertise: someone who is to support an S/4HANA migration needs different experience from someone building a cloud landing zone or writing a data protection concept. Our network holds more than 200 IT and subject-matter roles with a maintained task profile and day rate.

Freelance Profiles We Place Most Often — From SAP to Data Engineering
More than 200 IT and subject-matter roles in our network carry a maintained task profile and day rate. These groups are requested most often — from the SAP freelancer through cloud and software engineering to IT experts for data, AI and security.
SAP and Enterprise Systems
S/4HANA migrations, module consulting and integration form the largest single block: SAP architects, S/4HANA consultants and the module roles for FI/CO, MM, SD and BTP. An SAP consultant on a freelance basis typically comes in for a migration wave, an interface or a module rollout — not for steady-state operations. SAP & Enterprise Systems
Cloud, Infrastructure and Software Engineering
Cloud architects for AWS, Azure and GCP, landing zones, migrations and DevOps pipelines; on the development side full stack developers, backend engineers and enterprise architects. Cloud, Infrastructure & DevOps · Software Engineering & Architecture
Data, AI and Analytics
Data engineers build the pipelines, data scientists the models, and LLM and generative AI specialists take language models from prototype into an operation someone owns. Data Engineering & Data Science · AI & Machine Learning
Security, Service Management and Project Control
Cybersecurity consultants for protection requirements, hardening and evidence; IT consultants for service structures and outsourcing; IT project managers and agile coaches for control. Cybersecurity · IT Service Management · Project Management
All roles with task profile, typical projects and day rate are listed in the overview of areas of competence.
From Enquiry to Project Start:
How the Placement Works
Good freelancer placement starts with a brief, not with a profile. Anyone who wants to find an IT freelancer and names only a technology receives twenty CVs; anyone who names scope, interface and acceptance receives two that fit. The same applies when you want to find IT experts whose field only becomes clear in conversation. From a network of some 23,000 consultants, experts and interim managers we present quality-assured profiles within 24 to 36 hours.
Step 1 — Sharpen the brief. What should exist at the end, who accepts it, which systems and interfaces are affected, how many days per week, from when? The requirement profile comes out of those answers — and so does the basis for the contract structure described further down.
Step 2 — Pre-selection. We approach suitable experts personally and verify professional fit, comparable projects and genuine availability from the requested start date. You receive profiles with a day rate and a start date.
Step 3 — Engagement and start. You run the interviews and decide. Statement of work, acceptance criteria, duration and day rate are then put in writing — and the assignment constellation is reviewed before the first day begins.
Step 1: Understanding
Our key to success lies in our experienced team with consulting DNA. We understand the needs and concerns of today's decision-makers and take your challenge personally.
Step 2: Connect
We find the right solution for every challenge. Our strength lies in the diverse expertise of our network. With us, you will find the knowledge and the personalities you need - across all sectors, from strategy to implementation. In just 24–36 hours.
Step 3: Success
For us, it's not just about the technical aspects. Interpersonal relationships are at the heart of our business. We firmly believe that sustainable success can only be achieved by creating the perfect connection between people.
What an IT Freelancer Costs: Day Rates by Field
IT freelancers and subject-matter experts are billed by day of assignment. Across the 193 roles in our network with a documented range, day rates run from €400 to €1,650; the middle corridor sits between €800 and €1,150. An hourly rate can be derived from that, but in German project business it is the exception — the unit billed is the day.
Day Rates by Role
- Freelance SAP Architect €1,050–1,650
- LLM / Generative AI Specialist €1,000–1,600
- SAP S/4HANA Consultant €1,000–1,500
- Cloud Architect (AWS / Azure / GCP) €950–1,500
- Freelance IT Consultant €900–1,450
- IT Project Manager €850–1,350
- Data Scientist €850–1,300
- Data Engineer €800–1,250
- Full Stack Developer €900–1,200
- Cybersecurity Consultant €650–1,250
What Drives the Rate
Four variables explain almost the entire range. Depth of specialisation: an SAP architect or LLM specialist sits above a developer with a broad profile. Scarcity: roles with few available people cost more regardless of the task. Urgency: a start within days costs more than a start in six weeks. Workload and duration: five days a week over six months leaves room, two days a week does not.
Budget in days of assignment rather than in months: four days a week at €1,000 comes to roughly €17,000 per month. Travel and incidental costs are added as incurred and agreed before the start.
Contract Form, False Self-Employment and the AÜG: What Is Settled Before Every Assignment
The most common reason a freelancer assignment does not go ahead is not the day rate but the question from procurement or compliance: are we taking on a risk here? In Germany the answer depends on the actual constellation, not on the title of the contract — which is exactly why we review it before anything is commissioned.
Our Service Commitment
- Constellation review before every assignment. Before the contract is signed we review the assignment constellation — freedom from instruction, no integration into your organisation, a bounded brief rather than a standing duty — and we document the result.
- Contract form with a statement of work. Every assignment runs on a service or works contract with a concrete statement of work, acceptance criteria and a defined duration — deliberately not as disguised temporary agency work.
- Evidence on file before the start. Business registration or tax number, several clients and, where relevant, professional liability insurance.
- AÜG licence in place. Where a task carries the characteristics of temporary agency work, we can structure the assignment under German temporary employment law on request instead of forcing it into a works contract.
What we expressly do not promise is an assessment that is not ours to make. Whether self-employment exists is decided in a dispute by the German pension insurance authority and the courts, on the basis of how the work is actually performed. What we promise is the process — review, contract structure and documentation before every assignment — and a straight answer when a task is not suitable for a works contract.
How to Spot a Critical Constellation Yourself
Four patterns are the most common warning signs in practice: the expert works permanently inside a team instead of on a bounded brief; they are tied into duty, holiday or shift rosters; they use only your resources and appear externally like an employee; or the contract describes an activity rather than a result. Where these patterns appear, the issue is not the contract form but the brief — and that is what we sharpen together in step 1.

Frequently Asked Questions About IT Freelancers and Subject-Matter Experts
Billing is by day of assignment. Across the 193 roles in our network with a documented range, day rates run from €400 to €1,650, with the middle corridor between €800 and €1,150. Deep specialisations sit at the top — SAP architecture at €1,050–1,650 or LLM engineering at €1,000–1,600 — and broader developer and design profiles at the lower end. The rate is driven by depth of specialisation, scarcity of the role, urgency of the start, and workload and duration. The range for each role is shown on its role page.
What matters is how the work is actually performed, not the heading on the contract. Before every assignment we review and document the constellation: freedom from instruction, no integration into your organisation, a bounded brief rather than a standing duty. Every assignment runs on a service or works contract with a statement of work, acceptance criteria and a defined duration; business registration or tax number, several clients and — where relevant — professional liability insurance are on file before the start. Where a task carries the characteristics of temporary agency work, we can structure the assignment under our AÜG licence instead of forcing it into a works contract. What we do not promise is an assessment that is not ours to make: whether self-employment exists is decided in a dispute by the German pension insurance authority and the courts. We promise the process — and a straight answer when a task is not suitable for a works contract.
At responsibility. An IT or subject-matter expert delivers an acceptable result on a bounded brief; control and responsibility for the whole stay in your house. As soon as someone is to lead people, own budgets or fill a vacant position, that is an interim mandate — with authority to instruct and responsibility for results. If the direction rather than the capacity is open, a freelance management consultant is the fitting format. When architecture, delivery and control are needed at the same time, we supply several profiles as an expert team — a delivery format, not a separate category of people.
Excellent. We are not the only ones who think so.
